Testosterone Injection Administration for Low T Treatment

Testosterone Injection Administration

An injection of testosterone deep into muscle tissue provides quick absorption into the bloodstream for the treatment of Low T.

Testosterone injection administration is easy to accomplish at home. There is no need for costly office visits every two weeks to receive a testosterone shot.

For those who might shy away from injections, it is important to point out that absorption of testosterone is best when administered via intramuscular injection.

Another benefit of injectable testosterone is the lower cost as compared to testosterone gels, patches, transbuccal tablets, and implantable pellets (a surgical option).

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for testosterone injection self-administration so that you can see how easy it is to complete this process in the privacy of your home.

Indications for Testosterone Injections – How to Know if You Need Treatment

Men over the age of thirty begin to experience a decline in testosterone production that could be as much as one to two percent each year.

Those who lead active, healthy lifestyles often have the smallest decline, while those who engage in unhealthy eating habits, do not exercise, get little sleep, and are highly stressed often see the biggest drop in testosterone levels.

Testosterone injection indications for the treatment of Low T include:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Achy joints
  • Bodily stiffness
  • Muscle mass loss
  • Decreased bone density
  • Balding or thinning hair
  • Low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Anemia
  • Mental fog
  • Impaired cognitive functions
  • Depression
  • Mood swings
  • Social isolation

Hormone specialists such as the ones right here at Kingsberg HRT Clinic run comprehensive blood tests to determine the proper testosterone injection dosage for each man.

Important Information about Administering Testosterone Injections

Here are some important facts about self-administering an at home injection of testosterone, how to use the medication correctly, and what to know before getting started:

  • Testosterone should be stored at room temperature unless directed otherwise
  • Keep all medications and supplies out of reach of children and pets
  • Do not share testosterone with anyone else
  • Always check the expiration date before each use
  • Examine the testosterone for discoloration, crystals, cloudy appearance, or particles before use – do not use if any of these issues occur
  • Always wash hands with water and soap before starting and dry with a clean towel
  • Never buy testosterone from unregulated “black market” websites – make sure all medications come from licensed US pharmacies
The step by step directions for how to use testosterone injection at home are as follows:
  • 1. Gather all supplies to a clean, flat workspace:
    • Testosterone vial
    • Syringe with attached 18 G needle for withdrawing testosterone from the vial
    • Injecting IM needle
    • Two alcohol wipes
    • Sharps container
  • 2. Open one alcohol wipe and clean the top of the testosterone vial rubber stopper – allow to air dry
  • 3. Remove a new, unused syringe from its package and check that the 18 G needle is firmly attached
  • 4. Take off the needle cap and set it aside – do not discard
  • 5. Fill the syringe with an amount of air equal to the testosterone dosage – do this by pulling back the plunger
  • 6. With the testosterone vial held firmly on the counter, insert the 18 G needle tip into the center of the rubber stopper
  • 7. Push in the plunger all the way to send the air into the vial
  • 8. While holding the needle in place, invert the testosterone vial allowing the solution to cover the needle tip
  • 9. Carefully pull the plunger back out, filling the syringe with testosterone – this will be a slow process due to the viscosity of the solution
  • 10. Go a little beyond your prescribed dosage point and check for air bubbles – tapping the syringe to send them to the top and depressing the plunger to expel the bubbles and return to the appointed dosage
  • 11. Remove the needle from the vial and replace the cap
  • 12. Separate the capped needle from the syringe and discard the needle in the Sharps container – DO NOT USE THE 18 G NEEDLE FOR THE INJECTION
  • 13. Attach a new IM needle to the syringe
  • 14. Take another new alcohol wipe and clean the chosen injection site – let air dry
  • 15. Remove the IM needle cover and set aside – do not discard
  • 16. Insert the IM needle into the prepared muscle at a 90-degree angle – if using the thigh, you will divide the thigh muscle into three sections and target the outer part of the middle section
  • 17. Gently pull the plunger back just a little to ensure that you did not hit a vein – if you see blood enter the syringe, withdraw the needle, replace the cap, and discard the syringe in the Sharps container – prepare another injection as listed above
  • 18. If no blood is present, you may continue with the injection by slowly depressing the plunger until all of the testosterone enters the body – remember, the testosterone is thick, so it will take a little while to accomplish this
  • 19. When the syringe is empty, remove the needle from the body and replace the cap – discard the entire unit in the Sharps container
  • 20. Put away your testosterone medication and all supplies out of reach of children and pets

Most men choose their thighs for their bi-weekly testosterone injection. How to use this medication in any other area such as the buttocks, shoulder, or hip will be discussed with your hormone specialist. It is always best to have another individual administer the testosterone injection if choosing one of these locations.
